The Correct Coffee to Water Ratio

You read it everywhere: 2 level tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6-oz. cup. But if you’re a coffee lover, your cup is a mug and it’s closer to 8 ounces, if not more.

Of course, cup or mug size is not the only factor. Some say they only use filtered water to make coffee, even though the water is brewed to a very high temperature. If you don;t quite like your tap water as is, you might want to consider filtering it and see if there is a noticeable and agreeable difference the next time you brew coffee.

If you are trying different methods to secure a truly good brew, including finding the right grounds to water ratio, always experiment with one method at a time so you can clearly identify which change produced the most desirable results.

As for the ideal ration, here are simple guidelines:

  • 2 3/4 TBSP ground coffee for an 8-oz. cup
  • 3 TBSP for 10-oz. cup
  • 3 ¼ TBSP for 12-oz. cup
  • 3 ½ TBSP for 16-oz. cup.

Of course, it is a matter of taste. And that extra scoop for the pot is not merely superstition.
